About Us
Kuumba
House, Inc. is a
Houston
,
Texas
based non-profit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization governed by a board of
directors. Its mission is to create,
teach, perform, present and preserve the cultural experience of African art
forms in dance, theatre, music and other creative expression. Founded in 1982,
by South African, Lindi Yeni and Houston-based playwright, Thomas Meloncon,
Kuumba House has educated and entertained audiences with dazzling performances
of South and East African dance and thought-provoking theatre productions since
its inception. In the early years,
Kuumba House produced plays by noted playwrights, now its primary discipline is
dance. Kuumba House, Inc, is also
active in the
Houston
community with local arts advocacy, artist promotion, and community-building
collaborations. Because of the
diversity of the African Diaspora, the organization is committed to culturally
diverse presentations.
Staff
Kuumba
House is managed by capable staff members Sarah Namulondo, Artistic Director and
Thandi Hicks, Company Manager. Administrative
management is currently under the direction of Gayle Waden.
