Adult African Dance Classes—affordable classes in West, Southern and East African dance styles are offered to amateur and experienced dancers. 

 

Kwanzaa Concert—an annual African dance concert that highlights African cultural heritage and celebrates the African American holiday of Kwanzaa.

Juneteenth ConcertKuumba House is geographically located in Houston ’s Third Ward community.  Kuumba Kids are recruited from the surrounding neighborhoods and referred by other participants.  No prior dance experience is required.  There are no program fees; however, parents must participate as chaperones and in other volunteer capacities for their child(ren) to participate. Program goals include an international culture-sharing trip to either a continental African country or countries where the African influence is strongly evident in the indigenous culture.

Presentations

  • Bana Ba Bapala—African games and dances with live music (school audience, up to 45 minutes)
  • Trippin’ with Fudugazi—African storytelling and dances with live music (school audience, up to 45 minutes)
  • My Favorite African Songs—African songs and games with live music (school audience, up to 45 minutes)
  • Soweto Sunrise—African dance and song with live music (mixed audience at festivals, colleges, etc., up to 90 minutes)
  • Gumboot Talk—South African gumboot dance demonstrates the ingenuity of miners laboring in the coal and diamond mines as they sing, stomp, slap and cry to cope with being away from their families for long periods of time.
  • African dance, drum and music residencies and workshops are conducted by professional company members and designed to encourage understanding and appreciation of the cultural significance of African dance technique and folklore.
